To whom it may concern:
We seem to find the time to call or write and complain when things don’t go well, but sadly it’s less likely that we take a moment to say thank you when things do turn out happily. In this case, things went so much better than hope had allowed for, that I just had to take time to say just that – Thank You.
For weeks my little Cockatiel Spike, had been picking himself raw. Under his little wings and on his chest, dark red, angry skin and so many missing feathers. I had phoned every Vet and “bird person” I could find from Edmonton to Toronto. No one was interested. If they couldn’t see him, (for a visit of several hundred dollars), they didn’t care. Spike couldn’t handle the trip, he’s older and does not handle change well. One missing food dish in his cage and he has a fit. I begged them to make an exception, please could they make a house call, anything to please help him. Nothing. I even had one lovely “Veterinary professional” tell me that if the trip was going to kill him, I really had nothing to lose by bringing him in, did I?
I was truly beginning to think that putting him to sleep would be the kindest thing to do. Even his kind personality was becoming aggressive and unhappy. My little friend was miserable. Just when I had given up, I had one last call to make. I called G&E Pharmacy, I knew they couldn’t help – I’d already called them but I was desperate. A boy named Harley gave me your (Baker’s Bird Shop’s) number. That’s when I met your wonderful sales girl, Ally. Within less than two minutes, she was convinced that he had a horrible case of dry skin. Palm oil she said, lots and soon.
Due to a motor vehicle accident a number of years ago, it’s very hard for me to get out. I asked her if she could please put it in the mail. No problem at all, she said. I was so anxious to get started on treatment though, I couldn’t wait. I phoned back, maybe a half an hour later and said I would find away to get there. Do you know that in that short time she had already wrapped and addressed the package for mailing?
When I got to your beautiful shop, I met Ally in person and she was such a huge help. She loves birds, no doubt. On November 28th, 2013 I started him on his treatment. I thought because he was so run down that I would super dose for the first week or so just to get him back up to where he needed to be. He had some available to him each day and he really seemed to be enjoying it. Within days I could already see a difference. Shiny, shiny feathers and a beautiful dark grey colour was returning. Quickly the picking got less and less and his usual calm yet silly self returned as well. Tonight was the last beautiful piece of the puzzle – I was watching him talking to the silly bird that lives in the mirror, and a thought suddenly occurred; it’s been so long since he’s been goofy. On top of that, he has a tummy full of new feathers, shiny and beautiful and not itchy one bit. He’s Spike again. I sure have missed him.
In less than 2 weeks, your staff saved a life, no matter how small. Our animals, whether furry or feathered, are dearly important to us. Thank you Ally for knowing and caring about that fact and doing what you could to help. Honestly, even if this hadn’t worked, I would still thank her for her efforts. Thank you again.
Sincerely Lorettta K. and Spike

Please do not believe the negative comments on here that people have posted. I've been going to this store for 6 years and there is nowhere better in the city. Paul Baker is an expert with birds. In my family we have 5 birds, and when they get sick or hurt, (because birds are geniuses), he's offered better advice than my avian-certified vet. Not only that, one time he offered high quality vitamin supplements to one of my sick birds free of charge out of the kindness of his heart.
His products are actually bird-safe, and I've seen go to great pains to ensure that he sells food with no pesticides. He also buys local when possible. A large number of birds at the front of the store are boarding there, and not indicative of abuse. Unfortunately some owners treat their birds poorly and it's good that there's somewhere they can go when their owners don't have time for them.
The birds I bought from him are fantastic, and by far the best and most well-behaved I've owned, (and better than others my family bought from breeders). People have dumped birds on Paul and he's taken them in, too, because he's the kind of person who does his best to care for animals.
Paul Baker doesn't sugarcoat things, and will correct any misconceptions without hesitation. People with fragile feelings likely got upset and posted here, (Google Reviews), rather than actually resolving the issues they had with him. It's a shame. He only has the interests of his birds at heart. Anyways, I refuse to shop anywhere but at his store, and if you're serious about your birds, and take the time to look around, you will agree.

I had grown up with birds, and decided I wanted to adopt a parrot as a family pet. I had an idea of what I wanted, but the staff educated me on what was the right fit for my family. I would have never picked an Indian Ringneck on my own without their guidance. We are so happy with our choice, and Pepito fits so well in our home, and with my children. This place is an adventure...even if you're not looking to adopt, I would suggest you visit just to see all the amazing parrots.

I completely disagree with the negative comments about Bakers Feed and Seed. Paul is extremely knowledgeable and extremely helpful. He has always been able to answer any of my questions. I have asked multiple questions on certain visits and he has never given me the cold shoulder.
His birds are very happy and well treated. You may think that maybe he is not caring for the birds, because some may be plucked etc. This is actually likely/certainly not the case. Paul takes in surrendered parrots/birds and also boards birds while they're owners are away. Larger parrots are known to sometimes pluck when they are in distress. When a bird is surrendered or when an owner is no longer around is a very stressful event for a bird, regardless how well Paul treats the birds , so naturally some of them may be plucked.
I can assure you his birds are well cared for and he has nothing but great intentions for those birds. I will always go there for assistance and continue to give him my business. Before you make negative comments, you should probably get your facts straight!

Absolutely love this place. My kiddos and I could go there everyday!! The people who work there are friendly and are very knowledgeable. We bought our love bird there and now looking at buying a Indian ringneck. They also have the best bird toys and treats. We will continue to support local!! I would highly recommend this place to anyone.

I have to say the owner Paul is one of the most knowledgeable people when it comes to birds. He is very helpful and you can see he has a genuine concern for the birds.
All the birds are well cared for and you can see the staff also cares. I have bought birds from here in the past and all are still alive and doing well. If there is something you want or need, Paul will make every effort to get this for you.
Paul knows what breeders or people his birds come from , That says more then big name pet stores.
Hands down my first choice for any bird purchase.

Back in February (2014), My Parents bought me a English budgie, newly born just under 3 months old, I was able to take her home on the 23 of February. Since then every time I return the customer service is great and they treat my little girl like a princess.
I have boarded my girl with them once and was impressed with the amount of attention the birds receive. Each day the cage is cleaned and they're well taken after with lots of food and water. Definitely the place to go if your looking for a feathered friend!

My wife and I recently decided to purchase an African Grey Timneh from Baker’s Bird Shop. This came after conducting much online research and visiting some local stores. As it turns out Paul the owner of Baker’s had a two-month-old Grey available. Because of the young age of this parrot Paul would not release it for several weeks. We certainly understood and appreciated his position. This is what a proper breeder would do. For the last several weeks we have made it a priority to stop in the store (3-4 times a week) to visit and socialize with our Grey. This is something that was strongly encouraged by Paul and his staff. With each visit we are developing a bond and a strong recognition from the Grey to us has happened. This will help to ensure and positive healthy transition when we bring him home. The reason I mention this in my review is that having spent so much time in the establishment we have witnessed much of the normal routine. Paul and his staff are constantly cleaning and interacting with the avian tenants in the store. The cages are well spaced and positioned according to what birds need to be at a distance. Some of the cages that are out of reach are purposely placed so as they are the breeding cages and cannot be disturbed at such a critical time. Many other cages have rescue and rehome birds in them. These are being cared for and rehabilitated to hopefully rehome them. Until that occurs Paul Baker cares for and maintains them out of his own pocket. This is not a big box store. Baker’s is a small independent owner/breeder that is passionate about birds. His commitment to the industry and education of owners is awesome. We feel confident that in the future when we need to board our bird for times when we travel, it will be given outstanding care. I completely disagree with any of the negative comments that I have read regarding Bakers. It is unfounded Great work Baker's!

I just picked up my Quakers Aries and Zeus after being boarded at Bakers for August long weekend. They spent 4 days there. I just want to say this was my first time boarding my birds and I couldn't be happier with the way they were cared for. Paul the owner got them eating pellets which I was having a tough time with and my babies looked so happy to be there. This will be my only go to store everytime they need a babysitter from now on. I rate this establishment a 5 out of 5. Thank you so so much Paul and staff for your excellent service. Aries and Zeus thank you as well.

The following testimonial was taken directly off of Yelp.ca:
I recently boarded my senegal parrot here for the first time. I was EXTREMELY nervous, as I had never left her with anyone before- she is used to travelling with me wherever I go. When I first walked in I was shocked at how many birds there were! It was loud (of course) and I was pretty hesitant to leave my feather kid behind.
I set up her cage, which was a nice size for her, and right away the owner (??) came up and took her out of the cage- she took to him immediately! He was so great with her and she seemed to like him right away, which set my mind at ease a lot. Within seconds he had her cuddling up under his chin and assured me that she would spend more time out of her cage than in (which was wonderful, as that is what we do at home.)
When I came to pick her up she looked happy and didn't want to leave him! The staff were great and very friendly- I am very glad that I took my little lady here for her holiday and will definitely be back.

Got my Quaker, Pickles, from them last September. I was nervous and unsure about getting a parrot but they were patient and always willing to let me interact with the birds until i found a good match after several months of visits. I took Pickles back for three weeks of boarding and they took wonderful care if him.

Since before the fire I've been seriously considering another bird. I've had them before but it feels different this time. I've had a blue and gold macaw, his name is Blue boy. We also had an Africa gray parrot named Congo. I'm recently in the empty nest syndrome and knew I wanted another ( just maybe not the caliber) of my other two. A must was rear he/she was hand RAISED, CHECK . Secondly NOT "caught". Unfortunately many don't recover from such trauma. I've been doing so much research " on the bird for me". It came down to the Ringneck parrot!!. Then I found this site and just like it was supposed to be there... 1 baby hand raised Indian Ringneck parrot... Ready to go!!!! This was sad night. Had to wait till Monday to find out for sure if was still there for me. HE WAS. PAID IMMEDIATELY. He on top of it all is my favourite of all the colours they come in. He's grey with a reddish beak and one day may develop a red ring around his neck. I just want this company to know just how happy they have made me.
